New Zealand cricket team veteran Tim Southee has stepped down as the side’s Test skipper. The pacer’s move comes right before the IND vs NZ series which is scheduled to begin from October 16. Southee, who had taken over the reins from Kane Williamson, made his decision after the side’s 2-0 loss to Sri Lanka in the recently concluded series.

Explaining the rationale behind his decision, Tim Southee pointed out that he wanted to focus on his performance and help the team win Tests by taking wickets. Tom Latham will now lead the Kiwis in the longest format of the game. Southee extended his support for the new skipper and wished him luck for his new role.

Captaining the Blackcaps in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team,” Tim Southee said.

Tom Latham is no stranger to captaincy either, having led the Kiwis on nine occasions between 2020 and 2022. New Zealand coach Gary Stead and NZC CEO Scott Weenink were all praise for Southee, rating him highly for putting the interests of the team above himself.

He’s been a great servant of New Zealand Cricket over nearly 17 years playing on the international stage, and I’d like to acknowledge his humility in stepping down from the role as Test captain,” Gary Stead said.

Time for Southee to hit the reset button

The veteran has witnessed a slump in form this year, having managed to take only 8 wickets in 12 Tests so far. Southee will play a crucial role in the upcoming series against India where he will spearhead the pace attack along with young talents including O’Rourke, Ben Sears and Matt Henry.
