The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are yet to take any call on player retentions owing to reported confusion over the Player Regulations. As per a Times of India report, the teams are puzzled about the rules that explain the retention and Right to Match (RTM). The unclear situation over retentions comes ahead of the October 31 deadline for the franchises to submit their lists.

What do IPL 2025 retention/ RTM rules say?

As per the document explaining the rules that is accessed by Times of India, the retention deduction of the overall amount is Rs 75 crore irrespective of the money paid to the 5 players. The Player Regulations 2025-27 state that the prices for the retained players are fixed in the order of Rs 18 cr, Rs 14 cr, Rs 11 cr, Rs 18 cr and Rs 14 cr. A maximum of six retentions and RTMs each are allowed, with the discretion lying in the hands of the franchises to select the combination of RTMs/retentions. Rs 75 cr is the retention deduction mentioned while the price for uncapped players in fixed at Rs 4 cr.

What are the franchises’ concerns over IPL 2025 retention rules

  1. What is the price tag to be followed while retaining players?
  2. Will Rs 75 cr be deducted from salary cap if the total price of retentions exceed Rs 75 cr?
  3. What are the markers meant for if franchises can choose their own price for the retention picks?

Why are franchises confused about IPL 2025 retention rules?

A senior official of a franchise raised a number of questions over the rules, including if any price tag can be used to retain players instead of the fixed markers, if Rs 75 cr would be deducted from the salary cap if total retention price exceeds Rs 75 cr.

What are they trying to say here? It has left us confused too. Does this mean that any price tag can be followed while retaining players? Say Player 1 and Player 2 can be retained at Rs 18 crore each? And if the total price of retentions exceeds Rs 75 crore then that would be deducted from the Salary Cap. If it’s a free hand for the franchises to use their own prices for different retentions then what are the 18, 14 and 11 markers for?,” a senior official of a franchise told TOI.

“What we have got right now is just pointers. So many things are just stated and don’t have enough explanation/clarification for any team to act upon. We are hoping for a proper 30-40 page document, which explains everything, especially the footnote under retention/RTM rule,” said another official
