India’s long distance runner Gulveer Singh bettered his own national record in the men’s 5000m event at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup 2024 meet in Niigata, Japan on Saturday. He clocked an impressive 13:11.82s to take the gold medal in the World Continental Tour bronze level competition.

That also means, Gulveer Singh shed seven seconds from his previous national record of 13:18.92s that was set this year, in the United States. Meanwhile, Japan’s Mebuki Suzuki took the second place with a time of 13:13.80s. Local boy Kotaro Shinohara took the third place in the 19-man field clocking 13:15.70s.

Gulveer is also the national record holder in the men’s 10000m event — 27:41.81s.

Gulveer Singh Would Have Won Gold at Paris Olympics

If that is not enough, this performance would have landed a gold medal for Gulveer at the Paris Olympics in men’s 5000m. How, one would ask. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen had won the gold with a time of 13:13.66s, followed by Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya, who clocked 13:15.04s to get a silver. Grant Fisher of the USA got the bronze medal with a timing of 13:15.13s.
