Pakistan cricket team star Babar Azam has stepped down as the side’s white-ball captain. The batter, who was reinstated as the T20I skipper ahead of the T20 World Cup in June, took to social media platform X to issue a statement over his decision to leave the leadership position. Earlier in 2023, Babar had resigned as skipper after the side’s miserable outing at the ODI World Cup in India.

Babar Azam steps down as Pakistan captain

Babar Azam cited ‘significant workload’ as one of the reasons for stepping down as captain. The Pakistan star stated that he wanted to prioritize his performance, enjoy his batting and spend some time with his family. Babar has been out of form over the past year, failing to fire cylinders in major tournaments and series at home. Azam revealed that he had resigned as captain and had notified the PCB and the team management a month ago.

The call to replace Babar Azam as the Pakistan skipper grew louder following the side’s exit from the T20 World Cup at the group stage. The batter’s move to step down comes right after the connection camp that was held in Lahore which saw his other teammates, selectors, coaches and PCB officials in attendance. Key issues, including lack of team unity, anxiety of the players and others were discussed and commitments were sought from all stakeholders to resolve the issues and ink a roadmap for the side’s future.

Who will be Pakistan’s next captain?

With the Champions Trophy 2025 less than five months away, it remains to be seen who will be Pakistan’s next white-ball skipper. Many former cricketers have backed Mohammad Rizwan to take over the reins of the team in the limited overs formats. It is pertinent to point out that Babar Azam had replaced Shaheen Afridi as the T20I skipper after the latter led the team in just one series (against New Zealand) earlier this year.
